This past Friday, Hamas declared that it had endorsed certain aspects of Donald Trump's demand to end the conflict in the Gaza region, agreeing to a prisoner swap and to relinquish governing power in the Gaza strip, but stated that it desired additional discussions on other components of the proposal.

The group remained silent on whether it would comply to lay down its arms – a crucial element of the Trump plan – and remained unclear its response to additional parts of the comprehensive plan first proposed by Donald Trump earlier this week.

It was unclear how the former president would respond to a conditional response to his proposal, which came just a short time after he issued a weekend deadline for the group to answer. He stated that if an agreement was not reached "all hell" would ensue against the faction, whose fighters he portrayed as encircled and trapped.

Major Concessions and Conditions

In a announcement, Hamas said that it was providing its "endorsement of freeing all occupation captives – both living and deceased – according to the exchange formula included in president Trump's plan, with the required practical arrangements for implementing the swap."

The statement continued to say that Hamas was ready to hand over "the administration of the Gaza Strip to a local entity of independent technocrats founded on local consensus and supported by regional support."

Areas Requiring Further Negotiation

Nonetheless, the faction noted that "other issues" in Trump's proposal would need to be negotiated further "within a unified Palestinian national framework." The unstated topics that Hamas will request talks on are expected to include the matter of its weapons, the pullout of Jewish state troops from Gaza, and global assurances for the enforcement of a permanent ceasefire.

Trump's proposal called for an immediate cessation to hostilities in Gaza, an exchange of hostages and local prisoners within three days of the deal's signing, a phased withdrawal of state forces from the strip, as well as the disarmament of the group and a post-conflict interim administration led by Donald Trump.

Humanitarian and Reconstruction Provisions

The deal also specified a surge of assistance to the territory, parts of which are presently experiencing famine, and rebuilding to the mostly demolished strip.

The proposal was largely viewed as disadvantageous to the faction and if accepted in entirety, would likely spell the group's demise as an armed Palestinian faction while requiring few compromises from the Israeli government. Consequences of the Captive Exchange

Although the group did not right away consent to disarm, its consent to release captives will be seen as important. The 48 hostages have been used by the group as primary leverage throughout the almost 24-month war in its negotiations with the US and Israel. Giving them up will result in the group with limited negotiating tools in the future.

Not the U.S. administration nor Jewish state authorities have so far replied to the group's appeal for changes to the Trump's demand.

War Toll and Context

The Israeli war in Gaza has claimed at least over sixty-two thousand Palestinians and injured about 170,000, according to the Gaza health authority. The hostilities was initiated by Israel in response to Hamas-led militants murdering about 1,200 individuals and capturing 251 hostages in Israel about nearly two years ago.
