Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.
Police say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then located numerous other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report early analysis indicate the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; officials are not yet aware of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.
An important official stated the incident made him without words and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he wrote on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
